ETP4HPC General Assembly, 15th March 2016, Barcelona

ETP4HPC held its sixth General Assembly on 15th March 2016 at which all members of the association were invited. Barcelona Supercomputing Center hosted this event. Invited speakers were Dr. Panagiotis Tsarchopoulos, EC/DGCNECT, with an update from the European Commission, and, Prof. Mateo Valero, Director of Barcelona Supercomputing Center and a Cray Seymour Awardee, who presented his views on the development of the European HPC industry.

Our chairman, Jean-François Lavignon, made his presentation during which he discussed topics that included: membership status; main activities of 2015 since our last assembly in September; Centres of Excellence (CoEs); HPC projects; the European Ecosystem relationships and outreach; relationships with Big Data Value Association (BDVA); and, events in which ETP4HPC had participated in since September.

One of ETP4HPC’s main activities of 2015 was the publication of the Update on the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA 2) in November. Michael Malms, an ETP4HPC Expert, during his presentation discussed this and the plans for future SRAs. His talk also gave a reminder of the two calls in Work Programme 2016-2017 (Horizon 2020 programme): FET HPC 1 2016: Co-design of HPC systems and applications; and, FET HPC 2 2017: Transition to Exascale Computing, with its 5 subtopics.

ETP4HPC’s main events since September last were: ICT 2015 in October in Lisbon where we held a booth at the exhibition and organised a networking session; and Supercomputing Conference’15 in Austin, where we co-organised a Bird-of-a-Feather (BoF) Session when the European Exascale Projects under the European FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects were presented. Marcin Ostasz, an ETP4HPC expert, gave a presentation on an update on international collaboration during which he discussed this BoF’s full house success and its invited speakers.

Jean-Philippe Nominé, the third ETP4HPC expert, gave a presentation on the update on Impact Assessment and Monitoring Activities, where he discussed, amongst other topics, how the European eXtreme Data and Computing Initiative (EXDCI) and combined efforts here.

ETP4HPC chairperson concluded the ETP4HPC presentations by sharing ETP4HPC’s plans for 2016, with an update on the new initiatives that might make EU accelerate their HPC momentum (recently announced IPCEI and EC communication on Open Science Cloud expected in the coming days).

New members who were attending the assembly made a brief presentation on their organisation. This assembly showed that ETP4HPC is gaining momentum as an industry-led think tank and advisory group, whilst gaining visibility and interest throughout the European HPC community and in other continents.
