ETP4HPC Birds-of-a-Feather Session at SC17, November 14, 2017, Denver, Colorado

17/11/2017

The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC17) proved to be a great success this year. From November 12th until the 16th there was a hive of activity with 13,000 visitors, 2,800 international attendees from 71 countries, including 122 international exhibitors.

We held another Birds-of-a-Feather session, which took place on the evening of Tuesday 14th. This was organised on behalf of the European eXtreme Data and Computing Initiative (EXDCI) (the project coordination the European HPC Strategy). There was an attendance of more than 70 people this year, and the name of the BoF was 'European Exascale Projects and Their Global Contributions'. Many of these HPC technology and application projects were at SC17 to showcase their work, with the aim of starting new collaborations with international partners and also to accelerate the progress of exascale in R&D.

Jean-Pierre Panziera, ETP4HPC Chair, gave the welcome message which was followed by Eugene Griffiths, BSC and ETP4HPC Steering Board member giving a presentation on  'The European HPC Strategy'. This was followed by presentations by a selection of European HPC Projects: (BioExcel by Erwin Laure-KTH, SAGE by Sai Narasimhamurthy–Seagate and Mont-Blanc by Etienne Walter- Atos). Other presentations were: François Bodin of EXDCI on 'A Holistic View of European HPC', Paul Messina, Exascale Computing Project, United States on 'An Update on the US HPC Ecosystem', and Yutaka Ishikawa, Riken, Japan, on 'An Update on the Japanese HPC Ecosystem'.

A panel discussion followed and was moderated by François Bodin of the EXDCI, the European eXtreme Data and Computing Initiative (the project coordination of the European HPC Strategy), which proved to be very informative.

ETP4HPC would like to thank all the participants at this BoF, which contributed to its success.
