Simula Research Laboratory

Simula

The main objective of Simula Research Laboratory is to create knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. The research activities centre around three fields: communication systems, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula’s strong focus on basic research is combined with education of postgraduate students and development of commercial applications.

Simula has over the last years conducted the following research and innovation activities in the area of HPC:

  • New programming methodologies and software tools for enabling huge-scale heterogeneous CPU and accelerator computing;
  • Porting and running real-world biomedical and geoscience applications on flagship supercomputers, such as Tianhe-2 and Stampede;
  • Developed concepts and methods for routing, fault-tolerance, congestion management, dynamic reconfiguration, virtualization and, in general, management systems for HPC clusters and enterprise (cloud) data centres;
  • Founded a spinout company, Fabriscale Technologies, that has reached attention in the HPC community;
  • Close collaboration with prominent industrial partners such as Oracle, Intel, Nvidia, Mellanox Technoloiges, Numcascale, and Dolphin Interconnect Solutions.
