The Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET S.A. http://www.grnet.gr) is a state–owned company, operating under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education – General Secretariat for Research and Technology. Its mission is to provide high–quality electronic Infrastructure services to the academic, research and educational community of Greece; and link these with global eInfrastructures; and to disseminate ICT to the general public. GRNET is the main IT enabler for big science as well as long-tail science in Greece, and core player in international activities.

GRNET currently operates a backbone network providing coverage of the whole national territory. GRNET is interconnected with pan–European High Speed Network GÉANT with 4x10Gbps uplinks, having also an active role in pan-European network operations. GRNET is a leading cloud computing provider in Greece, operating the ~okeanos Infrastructure as a Service, hosted in a company owned datacenter. GRNET is also developing Synnefo, the cloud software for ~okeanos. GRNET coordinates the Greek National Grid Initiative – HellasGrid, with more than 1,700 CPUs and 200 Terabytes of storage and is one of the core participants of the European Grid Initiative.

GRNET is strongly involved in pan–European High-Performance Computing (HPC) initiatives: it is a core (non–hosting) member of PRACE project series and has coordinated the HP–SEE project (High–Performance Computing Infrastructure for South East Europe’s Research Communities), which established the HPC infrastructure in South East Europe. GRNET is currently deploying a national HPC Tier–1 centre in the order of 180 TFlops and large associated storage. In parallel, is putting in place an HPC expert team that will provide application and user support services to the Greek research and academic community.
