ETP4HPC webinar: EuroHPC - long-term vision and Work Programme 2024

Anders Dam Jensen, Executive Director of the EuroHPC JU, and Daniel Opalka, Head of R&I at the EuroHPC JU, have agreed to join us for a very special webinar dedicated to EuroHPC.

In this webinar, Anders will first introduce the EuroHPC JU. The EuroHPC JU joins together the resources of the European Union, 33 European countries and 3 private partners to develop a World Class Supercomputing Ecosystem in Europe. Anders will present the JU’s missions, including the procurement of world-class supercomputers across Europe and the implementation of an ambitious research and innovation programme supporting the technological and digital autonomy of Europe, and share the JU’s accomplishments since its inception in 2018, shedding light on its progress across these missions.

Then Daniel will present the EuroHPC JU’s ambitious R&I programme, featuring its portfolio of around 40 currently ongoing projects spanning diverse domains, including applications,  hardware development, skills and competences, and quantum computing. He will also present the EuroHPC JU’s Work Programme, and outlining the strategic initiatives EuroHPC JU is undertaking to achieve its ambitious goal of making Europe a world leader in supercomputing.

And as usual we will conclude with a Q&A session.

Speakers

Anders Dam Jensen is the Executive Director for the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking since September 2020. This appointment is the continuation of a lifelong interest in supercomputers, starting from his time at the Technical University of Denmark, from which he holds a Master of Science Degree and a Master of Business Administration. 

After spending the first part of his career working in engineering and pioneering IEEE802.11 wireless network technology with Symbol Technologies, Anders joined Cargolux Airlines International as Director IT and was instrumental in the spinoff of the Cargolux IT department into CHAMP Cargosystems S.A. In 2011, Anders became Director ICTM for NATO, and took on responsibility for all Information and IT services as well as one of the largest classified networks in Europe.

Daniel Opalka is the Head of R&I at the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) since February 2020. The appointment follows a long track record in HPC,? centred around applications of HPC to scientific challenges in chemistry, physics, materials science and quantum mechanics.

Daniel received his PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from the Technical University in Munich. He worked in research and as a university teacher at several research and education institutions including the University of Cambridge and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart.
