Fraunhofer

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by our researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas. In short, we forge the future.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft undertakes applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprise and of wide benefit to society.Facts & Figures at a glance:Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the largest organization for applied research in Europe. At present, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft maintains 66 institutes and research units. The majority of more than 22,000 staff are qualified scientists and engineers.€1.9 billion annual research budget totaling. Of this sum, €1.6 billion is generated through contract research. More than 70 percent of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects. Almost 30 percent is contributed by the German federal and Länder governments in the form of base funding.Research centers and representative offices in Europe, USA, Asia.

HPC plays an important role in the activities of many of the Fraunhofer institutes, often as a supportive technology (e.g. for the work on Big Data at Fraunhofer IAIS) or as a target for technology take-up (e.g. of the photonic networks developments at Fraunhofer IZM). In the area of HPC programming environments, two Fraunhofer institues are carrying out R&D on HPC technologies per se and have been directly contributing to the development of the ETP4HPC SRA.Fraunhofer ITWM: ITWM‘s Competence Centre for High Performance Computing addressed the shift to parallel programming at an early stage and brought innovative new software tools for the development of parallel software to the market. The Global Address Space Programming Interface GPI is at the heart of those tools. The key issues of effective I/O are addressed by BeeGFS, a Parallel File System formerly known as FhGFS.Fraunhofer SCAI: Building on its extensive work with parallel algorithms, solvers and applications, SCAI is actively investigating the development of mechanisms to extract the maximal potential of a given hardware through (semi-) automatic code transformation and parallelization techniques.
