ETP4HPC webinar: Quantum for HPC

10/12/2021

confirmed

11:00am - noon CET

We have invited the lead author and two co-authors of the ETP4HPC white paper on Quantum Computing.

From a High Performance Computing (HPC) perspective, QC needs to be integrated:

  • at a system level, where quantum computer technologies need to be integrated in HPC clusters;
  • at a programming level, where the new disruptive ways of programming devices call for a full hardware-software stack to be built;
  • at an application level, where QC is bound to lead to disruptive changes in the complexity of some applications so that compute-intensive or intractable problems in the HPC domain might become tractable in the future.

The presentation will focus on technology integration of Quantum Computing (QC) in HPC cluster, give an overview of the full hardware-software stack and QC emulators, and highlights promising customised QC algorithms for near-term quantum computers and its impact on HPC applications.

Speakers

Dr. Valeria Bartsch is part of the management team of  the High Performance Computing department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM) and leads a team in the areas of Next Generation Computing / Quantum Computing. She received her Diploma in Physics at the University of Dortmund (2000) and her PhD degree from the University of Karlsruhe (2003). Several postdoctoral positions in the area of experimental particle physics followed. A growing interest in computing led to the current position.

Dr Chayma BOUAZZA is leading the business development activities and international expansion at PASQAL. She received her doctorate from University PSL – ENS Ulm for her work on quantum gases in Jean DALIBARD’s group. After her PhD, she joined Erdyn, a consulting company specialized in innovation, where she worked on a wide range of topics (smart mobility, digital transformation, etc.). She joined PASQAL in November 2020.

Dr Daniele Ottaviani, CINECA. Mathematician, since his master's thesis he has been passionate about mathematical modelling and its applications. He completed his studies with a II. level Master degree in "Scientific Computing", where he deepened High Performance Computing (HPC), and with a Ph.D. in "Mathematics and Models". Since 2013 he has worked at the Astronomical Observatory of Rome "Monte Porzio Catone", where he has been a research fellow with tasks related to the realization "from scratch" (from theorization to optimized implementation) of mathematical algorithms for denoising of astronomical images (taken, in particular, by the Hubble telescope). Since 2018 he has been working in CINECA as HPC Software Developer, with a special active monitoring role for the nascent quantum technologies. Over the past two years he has participated in several projects related to quantum computing (two of which have become scientific articles), supporting universities and companies in their research of interest in the field. Since 2020 he is the Coordinator of the CINECA Quantum Computing Lab.
