The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) regrouping 630 people active in the fields of materials, environment, and IT.LIST is heavily using its own HPC for numerical modelling/simulation (computation intensive applications) and analysis/visualization of large data volumes (data intensive applications) mainly targeting applications in environmental and materials sciences.

The LIST is a key player in Luxembourg to support and promote the use of HPC both in research and in business contexts.The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is an RTO with a twofold mission:

  • contributing to Luxembourg's reputation through the participation in several targeted research areas among the best RTOs,
  • significantly participating in the country's socio-economic development.

To this end, the LIST participates in several national and European competitive research programmes. The LIST researchers disseminate their results through scientific publications in internationally renowned journals, results that are protected by filing patents and that are transferred to key players in the private or public sector.Thanks to its activities in applied research and technology transfer, the LIST supports companies in their innovation projects. The objective is to enable them to enhance their competitiveness in regional, national, and international markets. Furthermore, the LIST also contributes to the setting up of new companies in Luxembourg through the development of innovative technology and expertise. Lastly, LIST offer its scientific support to national policy making in its research areas in order to forecast and support societal changes.

HPC at LISTThe LIST implemented one of the first public HPC platforms in Luxembourg. The aim was to support and promote existing research projects in the domain of environmental and materials sciences. The applications cover a broad range of heavily parallelized models (e.g. climatological models) to large array simulations of sequential codes (e.g. Monte Carlo simulations in materials surface characterization). The HPC platform consists of a Linux cluster, centralized storage and dedicated pre/postprocessing environment hosted in a specific server room and operated by a dedicated support staff.The LIST HPC is used on a daily basis by numerous researchers mainly in the field of environmental and materials sciences for numerical modelling/simulation (computation intensive applications) and analysis/visualization of large data volumes (data intensive applications).The HPC contributes to the LISTstrategy by supporting and enabling the activities of various teams within the institution, including:

  • modelling and simulation in hydrology and climatology;
  • data analytics in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics (for plant science);
  • remote sensing, satellite images processing;
  • geocomputation;
  • modelling and simulation for renewable energy;
  • big data analytics and visualization;
  • parallelization of visualization algorithms;
  • large scale visualizations;
  • modelling and simulation for new materials, including nanomaterials and biopolymers;
  • computational engineering based on finite elements methods;
  • ab-initio calculations in physics
