IBM

IBM is a globally integrated technology and consulting company headquartered in Armonk, New York. With operations in more than 170 countries, a 2012 turnover of US $104.5 billion and more than 430,000 employees, IBM attracts and retains some of the world's most talented people to help solve problems and provide an edge for businesses, governments and non-profits. Innovation is at the core of IBM's strategy. The company develops and sells software and systems hardware and a broad range of infrastructure, cloud and consulting services.

Today, IBM is focused on four growth initiatives - business analytics, cloud computing, growth markets and Smarter Planet. IBMers are working with customers around the world to apply the company's business consulting, technology and R&D expertise to build systems that enable dynamic and efficient organizations, better transportation, safer food, cleaner water and healthier populations. In today’s environment, organizations must strive for ever better outcomes. Whether it’s improved financial performance, shorter product development cycles in better understanding of molecular level interactions, or more efficient ways to simulate the behavior of materials at nanoscale, these seemingly different goals have something similar in common – the need to simulate, model, or forecast complex relationships that can be numerically or statistically represented. These are data - and computationally-intensive tasks that require solutions that are up to the challenge. We call this Technical Computing.Technical Computing is about improving outcomes thru a better understanding of the technical or business environment. This insight can help lower risk and improve decision making ability, and helps organizations more quickly seize upon new opportunities created through advancements in business model or technological capability. IBM Technical Computing solutions empower businesses and organizations to achieve better results faster by bringing high performance systems to a broad range of users.Success in Technical Computing is about more than compute power. That is why IBM brings together enterprise-class, leading edge technologies for compute, storage, and systems networking, accompanied by a powerful, intuitive software portfolio to manage clusters, workloads and data.Organizations can improve productivity by leveraging a powerful portfolio of performance optimized systems and software. IBM Platform Computing management software brings industry leading management capability for Technical Computing users of all sizes. This comprehensive set of management capabilities provide built-in automation, intelligence and cloud technologies to reduce start-up and operational complexity. IBM’s systems provide high performance, dense and power efficient compute, storage and networking capabilities that can address the problems today, while advancing to solve the complex problems of tomorrow.

IBM is very present in Europe with Research and Development: The IBM Germany Research & Development Center based in Boeblingen, south of Stuttgart is one of the largest research and development centers of the corporation outside the US. Since established in 1953, the center runs IT development and research projects for the global market. Computer scientists, electrical engineers and physicists from more than 30 countries on site as well as in other cities in Germany are working in more than 70 hardware and software projects in close cooperation with other IBM research and development centers around the globe. The project topics range from Cloud Computing to Data Analytics, from Software for Business Process Management, Data Center Optimization to Web 2.0 Technologies, as well as Hardware, Firmware and Operating Systems for IBM Systems. The Lab hosts the largest team of experts for the open operating system Linux as well as for SAP technologies on IBM hard- and software platforms. A number of Lab experts hold lectures at various German universities and maintain collaborations with more than 30 national academic and research institutions to ensure a continuous transfer of knowledge between industry and science.IBM has maintained a research laboratory in Switzerland since 1956, located on a leafy campus just outside of Zurich. As the largest European branch of IBM Research, the mission of the IBM Research - Zurich Lab, in addition to pursuing cutting-edge research for tomorrow's information technology, is to cultivate close relationships with academic and industrial partners, be one of the premier places to work for world-class researchers, to promote women in IT and science, and to help drive Europe's innovation agenda.IBM Research - Zurich is widely known for having achieved two Nobel prizes for the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope in 1986 and the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in 1987. In the 21st century, IBM Research - Zurich continues to pursue exploratory research with the new Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center, where scientists research novel nanoscale structures and devices to advance the energy efficiency of information technologies.Highlights of our presence and success in combination with European partners are the installations at Forschungszentrum Juelich, currently with Europe's fastest supercomputer (JUQUEEN) and at Leibniz Rechenzentrum Garching, with one of the most innovative General Purpose Systems in the world and hot water cooling (SuperMUC), both among the current top10 in the Top500 supercomputer list. Furthermore lighthouse projects are the Cooperation with ASTRON in the Netherlands the development of exascale technology for the world's largest telescope, the so-called Square Kilometer Array.
