Julich

Forschungszentrum Jülich pursues cutting-edge interdisciplinary research to address pressing issues of the present, most of all the future energy supply. With its competence in materials science and simulation and its expertise in physics, nanotechnology and information technology and also in the biosciences and brain research, Jülich is developing a basis for the key technologies of tomorrow. Forschungszentrum Jülich helps to solve the grand challenges facing society in the fields of energy and the environment, health and information technology. With a staff of almost 5,000, Jülich - a member of the Helmholtz Association - is one of the large interdisciplinary research centres in Europe.

Organisation details The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) is one of the institutes at Forschungszentrum Jülich. With its partners, JSC has been operating the first German supercomputing centre since 1987, and within the Jülich Institute for Advanced Simulation it is continuing the long tradition of scientific computing at Jülich.Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich is currently operating the most powerful and most energy-efficient European Petascale Supercomputer, JUQUEEN, providing resources to national and European researchers through the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS), the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC), and through the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE). JSC has been fostering and developing scientific computing since 1983, conducting interdisciplinary, supercomputer-oriented scientific research, and offering education and training.

HPC at JSC JSC has approx. 200 experts working on all aspects of supercomputing and simulation. The main research focus is on mathematical modeling and numerical, parallel algorithms, which are developed in simulation laboratories dedicated to specific scientific fields and are used in applications from neuroscience, computational biology, material science as well as energy and climate research. In the realm of computer science, JSC researchers focus on cluster computing, performance analysis of applications, visualization, computational steering and federated infrastructures. In funded projects and cooperations with hardware and software firms, such as IBM, Intel and ParTec, as well as NVIDIA, JSC drives development towards exaflop systems and tackles the challenges associated with scaling up the next-generation supercomputers.
