ETP4HPC is the European Technology Platform (ETP) in the area of High-Performance Computing (HPC). It is an industry-led think-tank comprising of European HPC technology stakeholders: technology vendors, research centres and end-users. The main objective of ETP4HPC is to define research priorities and action plans in the area of HPC technology provision (i.e. the provision of supercomputing systems). We issue and maintain a Strategic Research Agenda as a mechanism to help the European Commission define the contents of the HPC Technology Work Programmes. We also act as the “one voice” of the European HPC industry in relations with the European Commission and national authorities. ETP4HPC was formed in October 2011.
The importance of HPC for Europe was regonised by the EC in its Communcation: 'High Performance Computing: Europe's place in a Global Race' (Feb 2012). This key document also stipulates the creation of a European Technology Platform for High-Performance in order to align the efforts of the European HPC technology providers and faciltate the emergence of a globally competitive HPC industry in Europe.
High Performance Computing (HPC) plays a pivotal role in stimulating Europe’s economic growth. HPC is a pervasive tool allowing industry and academia to develop world class products, services and inventions in order to maintain and reinforce Europe’s position on the competitive worldwide arena. HPC is also recognised as crucial in addressing grand societal challenges. “Today, to Out-Compute is to Out-Compete” best describes the role of HPC.
