The High Performance Computing Centre (HLRS) is one of three national computing centers in Germany affiliated to the University of Stuttgart. As such it operates a variety of large computing clusters and provides compute resources to European research groups and industry. The main research interests are in the domain of parallel programming languages, grid computing and cloud computing.
HLRS research and operation focus is oriented towards:
Over the last 20 years HLRS has built up world-leading expertise in supporting end-users, from the engineering domain at large, in parallel programming (for example inside the Teraflop Workbench). It has worked on the development of productivity tools for parallel programming, including integrated development environments. HLRS has significant expertise in applying software engineering methods to the HPC domain. HLRS has been a leading center in Grid and Cloud computing very early on.
The High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) of the University of Stuttgart supports researchers from Germany and Europe as well as industry with leading edge supercomputing technology. Services are supplied in collaboration with scientific partners through SICOS GmbH and industrial partners through hww GmbH (T-Systems, Porsche AG). In European, national and industrial projects HLRS conducts basic and applied research in HPC together with partners from research and industry. Collaborative research with automotive industry goes through the Automotive Simulation Center Stuttgart (ASCS).One of the key aspects of this institute is the operation of the supercomputers owned by HWW GmbH, a public-private partnership consortium comprising among others T-Systems and Porsche AG. Since March 2008, HLRS provides the computer centre for the Automotive Simulation Centre in Stuttgart, a joined initiative from industry and research with partners like Daimler, Porsche, Opel, Karman, Altair Engineering and others. In 2011 HLRS acquired a new Cray XE6 platform with the goal to increase its base of customers.
